“I dance with abstract Arabic calligraphy
on the rhythm of the breath.
Each stroke is an emotion in motion,
a line of poetry crossing the surface.”

Selected Works

Hope Fairy

Drawn in the air with a moving light, in complete darkness, this figure existed to no one while it was being made, not even to me. Only the long exposure gathers it into a body: Christine Dixon, performer, in the presence of Harriet Tubman, who led people through the dark toward a light they had to trust before they could see it.

Beyond the Naked Eye

Left to rot on the street, this painting was not repaired but reborn. Its wounds remain, threaded through with wool, worn like scars that hold light. To look beyond the naked eye is to find hope where others find ruin.

Floating State

Three metres of ink, worked on the ground and later raised, not one gesture but many held across the surface like a held breath. This was not painted with a brush but danced with a broom, its wide sweep leading, my body following, until the effort dropped away and what remained was flight. Floating is not where the hand drifts. It is where the body, after enough practice and listening, finally stops forcing and begins to move.

Abstract Arabic calligraphy as a living language, between breath, body, and borderlessness.

Wawi Abdel Kader is a Paris-based multidisciplinary artist born in Tripoli, Lebanon. His practice, rooted in abstract Arabic calligraphy, movement, and breath, moves fluidly between painting, performance, light, and urban intervention.

His work asks a single question in many forms: what does it feel like to be oriented between worlds?
